Bolt Wins Beijing 100m Gold in World-Record 9.69

At the Beijing Olympics, he claimed 100m gold in a world-record 9.69 seconds, easing up before the line and racing with a loose shoelace — the run that made him a global figure.

On 16 August 2008, Usain Bolt won the Olympic 100m final in Beijing in a world-record 9.69 seconds. It was his first Olympic gold, and it turned a fast young Jamaican into a global figure overnight.

A world record set with a shoelace undone

Bolt did not run the race out to the finish. Well clear of the field, he eased up before the line, arms spreading wide as he crossed it.

He had done it with a loose shoelace, and still took the record. The mark of 9.69 showed how much time he had left on the track by slowing early.

The manner mattered as much as the number. A sprinter who could break the world record while easing down changed how the event was understood.

The first gold in a run that reached eight

Beijing was the start, not the peak. Four days later he added the 200m, and the sprint double became his signature at every major meet that followed.

He defended the 100m title in London in 9.63, an Olympic record, and reached the top again in Rio. By his final Olympic race in 2016 he had sealed eight career Olympic golds, and won eleven world championship titles along the way.

The later races carried more history. He held both sprint world records at once in 2009, and anchored Jamaica to a relay world record in London that still stands.

Yet Beijing carried the shock. It was the night the sport learned what he could do at ease, and everything he became traces back to that first run.
