The final count arrived on a January night, and it closed a decade-long argument. Barry Bonds, baseball’s all-time home run king, drew 66.0 percent of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America vote in his tenth and final year of eligibility. He needed 75 percent. He missed by 35 ballots.

Results were revealed on MLB Network on 25 January 2022. David Ortiz was the lone player elected that evening, receiving 307 votes in his first appearance on the ballot. Bonds’ 260 votes represented his highest share since 2013, a modest final-year bump from 61.8 percent the previous cycle. Roger Clemens, at 65.2 percent, and Curt Schilling fell short alongside him.
The tally ended a ten-year climb that never crested the threshold: 36.2 percent in 2013, rising slowly through the forties and fifties, touching sixty only in 2020. No player with such sustained majority support had ever exhausted his ballot run without reaching Cooperstown — Bonds and Clemens became the second and third to finish with over half the vote in each of their final six years without induction.
