Matthew Bostock attacked alone at the halfway point of the scratch race at the Shanghai Velodrome on 15 October 2026, holding off the field to claim his first world title. The Manx rider became the first British cyclist to pull on a rainbow jersey at these championships, beating New Zealand’s Tom Sexton and Belgium’s Lindsay De Vylder by more than half a lap.

Solo from the halfway mark

The 40-lap race was animated by Bostock from the start. Alex Vogel of Switzerland was already clear in a breakaway when Bostock jumped clear of the bunch around the midpoint, and his lone chase began to reel in the lone leader.

He caught and passed Vogel with roughly 10 laps remaining and went on to lap several riders in the bunch, sealing Britain’s first rainbow jersey of the championships.

Late call-up, lifelong dream

The 29-year-old had been called up only the night before. His plan after the Commonwealth Games had been to skip these championships entirely and target the following season.

Bostock arrived in Shanghai with a bronze from the team pursuit at the 2026 European Championships in Konya. A points-race gold for the Isle of Man at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow had already marked his summer, along with British national titles in the scratch race and elimination race.

“I couldn’t be happier.”

For a rider who was not even in the original line-up and had stepped away from the track to watch his partner, Megan Barker, at the Olympics, the first rainbow jersey is already on his shoulders.
