Cam McEvoy won the men's 50m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, touching the wall in 20.97. The swim made him the first man in history to break 21 seconds more than once. He glanced up at the board, then let the number settle.
First man to go sub-21 twice
McEvoy led from the first strokes and was clear of the field by the halfway mark. His fellow Australians Flynn Southam and Jamie Jack, together with Canada's Josh Liendo, trailed in his wake. He covered the length without taking a breath and never looked troubled.
The time ranks fourth on the all-time list and stands as a new Commonwealth Games record. It fell just 0.09 seconds short of his own world mark of 20.88, set earlier this year at the China Open, and counts as his second-fastest race. He also lowered Ben Proud's 2018 championship best of 21.30 by more than three tenths of a second.
