Daryz Repeats in Arc, First Colts' Double Since 1978

Daryz, ridden by Mickael Barzalona and trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for the second consecutive year — the first colt to go back-to-back since Alleged in 1978.

Daryz won the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe for the second consecutive year at ParisLongchamp, becoming the first male horse in 48 years to achieve back-to-back victories in Europe's most prestigious Flat race.

A withering run with 400 metres left

Jockey Mickael Barzalona found himself far further back than planned as Bay City Roller cut across to lead early on a sweltering October afternoon that defied the usual damp Paris autumn. With 400 of the 2,400 metres remaining, Barzalona finally got Daryz into clear air on the outside. What followed was devastating — a withering run that carried the favourite home a 1¼-length winner, with Bay City Roller holding second and Diamond Necklace a neck away in third.

After needing every inch of the trip to edge Minnie Hauk a year earlier, this was a far more commanding performance. "When I saw him in his ease on the outside, I knew he was going to accelerate really strongly and he did," trainer Francis-Henri Graffard told reporters afterwards.

Bridging a half-century gap

Only fillies Treve and Enable had managed successive Arc wins since Alleged completed his double in 1978. The Aga Khan homebred, by Sea The Stars out of Daryakana, returned to a winner's enclosure crowd chanting "bravo, bravo – back-to-back!" as Barzalona dismounted.

The achievement carried deeper resonance coming roughly a year after the death of Aga Khan IV. His daughter Princess Zahra, representing the family at Longchamp, said it simply: "I just know that he would be so proud to see a homebred do that twice in a row." Daryz was sent off the 6/5 favourite and justified every penny of that faith.

Post-race comments strongly signalled retirement to stud rather than a racing campaign at age five. Princess Zahra captured the calculus: "You get to the point where you're taking a risk every time you run the horse." If this was Daryz's farewell, it was the exit an Arc champion deserves.
