The baton reached Elaine Thompson-Herah in second place. Canada led through Donna Ntambue on the anchor. Thompson-Herah set off in pursuit, closed the gap down the back of the straight, and moved clear before the line. Coming into the straight, her leg felt heavy. She could feel the hamstring, so she told herself she had to bring the team home. She did. Despite the injury scare, the five-time Olympic champion, who spent 20 months sidelined with an Achilles injury, kept her focus and brought the team over the line. Afterwards, she spoke plainly about the relief. "I'm grateful that I crossed the line healthy," she said. "Coming into the straight, my leg felt heavy. I could feel the hamstring, so I told myself I had to bring the team home."
How Gaborone was decided
The final came on the closing day of the Debswana World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana. Briana Williams replaced Shericka Jackson on the lead-off leg of the team that had run 41.96 seconds in Saturday's first-round qualifying, handing over to Jodean Williams while Lavanya Williams ran the third leg. The handovers held. Thompson-Herah got the baton in second place behind Canada but caught and passed anchor leg runner Donna Ntambue and appeared to ease up as she crossed the finish line. Canada ran a national record of 42.17 seconds for the silver medal, with Spain taking the bronze in 42.31 seconds.
