Lance Haidet set a new supported fastest known time on the Badwater to Whitney Portal duathlon on 6 October 2026, completing the 139.3-mile route in 11 hours, 23 minutes and 46 seconds. He removed nearly 1 hour and 52 minutes from Ryan Tetz’s 2019 record of 13 hours and 16 minutes.

Four bikes and a beautiful day

The American cyclist managed the bike leg with a precise equipment strategy. He started on a time-trial bike from Badwater, swapped to a road bike for the climb past Father Crowley overlook, returned to the TT bike into Lone Pine, and switched back to the road bike for the final pull up to Whitney Portal. A support crew handled feeds and transitions at every change.

At the trailhead the crew helped with a gear transition, then a videographer accompanied Haidet up the Mountaineers route. His fiancée met them at the summit. He had begun the day 266 feet below sea level on the desert floor and finished it at 14,500 feet.

"It was a beautiful day," Haidet wrote afterwards. "I felt really strong on both the ride and ascent of the Mountaineers route and really got lucky with the weather."

A career built for this distance

Haidet, born in 1997, raced professionally on the road and in cyclocross for Aevolo and L39ION of Los Angeles before shifting toward gravel and ultra-endurance events.

For scale, the women’s supported mark, set by Rylee Sweeney in 2019, stands at 21 hours and 36 minutes. Haidet tracked the full effort on his watch and bike computer, although an accidental button press at the final bike swap split his ride file into two segments. The record is verified.

The numbers confirm what the day delivered: a clean run when the variables lined up, and an athlete who did not let the moment pass.
