Hicham El Guerrouj set the mile world record at the Golden Gala in Rome on 7 July 1999, stopping the clock at 3:43.13. The performance reclaimed a classic record for Morocco and began a reign that would stand unchallenged for 27 years.
A still night, a clock and a rival
The race unfolded on a warm, humid and almost windless evening at the Stadio Olimpico. Pacemakers took El Guerrouj through the first quarter in 55.07 seconds and past the halfway point in 1:51.58, with 1992 Olympic 800 m champion William Tanui among those cutting the wind. There was no Wavelight on the rail — only the rabbits, feel, and the track clock.
Ngeny pushes it to the line
At the three-quarter mark the split read 2:47.91, and Kenya’s 20-year-old Noah Ngeny was still tucked right behind. Ngeny, who had paced El Guerrouj’s 1500 m world record the year before, chased hard down the homestretch and crossed the line in 3:43.40 — also under the previous world mark. It was a genuine race; the winner was not certain until the very last stride.
