Matteo Iachino secured his fourth PWA Foil Slalom world title at the Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt on 4 October, overturning a narrow deficit on the final day after a semi-final collision ended Fabian Wolf's challenge. The Italian finished third in the decisive eighth elimination to snatch the crown.

A collision that changed everything

Wolf started the day holding a 0.3-point lead and had reached every final all week. The course ran close to shore, the finish line sitting directly in front of the riders' paddock, where crowds gathered in bright sunshine on the bank holiday.

Both men progressed through their quarter-finals without trouble. In the semi-final, Wolf trailed Nico Prien exiting the first gybe. Prien fell, and Wolf, directly behind, could not avoid him and also crashed off his board.

The collision relegated Wolf to the third-place play-off and left Iachino a clear path. "I wanted to make it to the final and take the gybe as tightly as possible," Prien said, "but I ended up crashing into him."

Third place, fourth crown

With Wolf out of contention, Iachino needed third place or better in the final. Pierre Mortefon won the race ahead of Amado Vrieswijk, and Iachino crossed the line third — exactly enough. When the wind weakened and a planned ninth elimination was scrapped, the standings locked tight.

The title extends Iachino's Sylt record after previous wins in 2015, 2016 and 2018. Wolf, who still recorded his best result at a major World Cup, described his mood as "a mixture of pride and a touch of sadness." Vrieswijk completed the overall podium.
