Janice Tjen struck the ball cleanly on Court 18, and the scoreboard barely wavered. On 29 June 2026 the Indonesian defeated the No. 22 seed Leylah Fernandez 6-1, 7-6(3) in the first round of Wimbledon. It was her debut at the All England Club. It made her the first Indonesian woman to win a match at Wimbledon since Angelique Widjaja in 2003.
The match turned early. From the start Tjen appeared aggressive, breaking Fernandez's serve in the opening game and seizing two more of her opponent's service games to open a 5-1 lead. The first set took little time. The second was tighter, Fernandez pressing to stay in the contest, but Tjen held her nerve into a tie-break and closed it 7-3. The 24-year-old needed just one hour and 29 minutes to see off Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, and reach the second round.
The numbers explained the margin. Fernandez finished with five aces and three double faults, produced 20 winners, but was undone by 22 unforced errors and failed to convert any of her break-point opportunities. Tjen, by contrast, converted three of her nine break-point chances, underlining her efficiency at key moments. This was not an ambush. Tjen had beaten Fernandez twice already in 2026, including in Melbourne.
