The clock stopped at 49.74, and Lurdes Gloria Manuel had her answer. On 16 June 2026, at the Ostrava Golden Spike, the 20-year-old ran the women's 400m of her life on home ground. She dipped under the 50-second barrier for the first time outdoors, crossing the line in a personal best of 49.74. The Mestsky Stadion crowd, waiting for one of their own, rose with her.
How the race was won
It was a lap of control rather than panic. Manuel executed a well-timed race, holding her form down the final straight to clear the rest of the field. The pressure came from a familiar quarter. Cuba's Roxana Gomez pressed hard but had to settle for second in 50.20. Ireland's Sharlene Mawdsley took the last podium place in 50.28. Behind them the field stayed honest: Slovakia's Emma Zapletalova came fourth in 50.59, ahead of Spain's Blanca Hervas.
The margin told the story. Nearly half a second separated Manuel from Gomez at the line, on a Continental Tour Gold card built for fast running. She did not need the final metres to fight for the win. She used them to run away.
