Joel Naukkarinen and Eeva Karppinen of Finland won the coastal mixed double sculls world title in Qingdao on Tuesday. The victory completed a week that had already brought each of them a bronze medal in the solo events. Their winning time over the 6 km course was 29:31.37, almost 15 seconds clear of the United States crew.

Fourth at halfway, dominant by the finish

The Finnish pair sat only fourth at the 1000 m mark. Kory Rogers and Sera Busse of the USA had started better, but Finland took the lead by the second timing marker at 2400 m and then pulled away. The Americans slipped back in the middle of the race.

Rogers and Busse finished second in 29:45.70. A tighter turn around the final buoy gave them silver ahead of China's Long Zhentao and Yang Yujiao, who came third in 29:55.98. Silver was contested only between those two crews, with France fourth and fifth.

Naukkarinen had earlier described the interplay of wind, swell and tide there as hard to read. In the heat, Finland won in 17:18.53 after an early tussle with the same American pair.

Two bronzes, then a first Finnish gold in 26 years

Naukkarinen and Karppinen arrived in Qingdao as defending European champions. They won the continental title in Antalya in 2025 and renewed it in La Línea in September 2026. Their world gold ends a 26-year wait for a Finnish open-water rowing world title.

Naukkarinen said he could read the Golden Beach conditions better after his solo race, and that he told Karppinen to trust their plan even when it felt wrong.
