Sara Lopez shot 149 in the compound women final at the Zocalo de Puebla, one ring short of a perfect 150, and it was enough. Across the line, Lisell Jaatma of Estonia dropped a single point to 148. The margin held. Lopez lowered her bow, covered her mouth and wept. Gold at Puebla 2026, the opening stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup, belonged to Colombia.
The victory was built on nerve earlier in the day. In the semifinal she met Dafne Quintero, the Mexican carrying a home crowd that cheered every arrow. Neither archer gave way. They tied at 149-149 through the regulation five ends, and the match went to a single-arrow shoot-off. Quintero landed 29.8 millimetres from the centre. Lopez placed her last arrow in the spider, closer to the X, and advanced. Three shoot-offs in all had stood between her and the final, two of them in the midweek eliminations.
The decisive line
In the gold match she needed no second sudden death. The 149 she posted against Jaatma left no room for a reply, and the Estonian took her first individual World Cup stage medal in defeat. Alejandra Usquiano completed a Colombian double on the podium with bronze. Lopez had seeded third in qualification with 696, a total she called disappointing, then reminded herself that even at her worst she remained inside the top five. She prepared for the finals on the practice field, trusting experience over form.
