Houston asked one question after another, and Vozinha answered every time. On 26 June 2026, at NRG Stadium, the Cabo Verde goalkeeper held Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw and carried his country into the Round of 32. An island nation off the western coast of Africa, making its debut on football's grandest stage, became the smallest country ever to reach the knockout rounds of a World Cup.
The saves came in a sequence, spread across the ninety minutes. The first arrived in first-half stoppage time, a header from Mohamed Kanno gathered before it could settle. The second came in the 66th minute, when Vozinha leapt to deflect a shot from Mohammed Abu al-Shamat. The third came in the 92nd minute, a strike from Abdullah al-Hamdan stopped as Saudi Arabia searched for the goal that would save their tournament. At the other end Cabo Verde had their own moments and let them pass. The score held.
Decided in Houston, and in parallel
Qualification was not settled by Cabo Verde alone. The result in Houston, coupled with Spain's 1-0 win over Uruguay, saw them finish as runners-up in Group H behind La Roja. A couple of minutes after the final whistle, Spain completed their victory, and Cabo Verde's players and supporters wept as they celebrated. Among the crowd of 68,278 was Vozinha's mother, Ana Candida Evora, watching from a suite, her second match of the tournament after missing the Spain game because of visa issues.
