Jhoan Guzmán won the men's 100 m at the World Skate Games in Asunción and lowered a world record he already held. The Spanish sprinter crossed the line in 9.467 seconds. He finished ahead of Italy's Vincenzo Maiorca by 0.043 seconds.
A record on a troubled Costanera circuit
The race ran on the Costanera road circuit, one of the most explosive distances in the discipline. The sprint drew high-level skaters from Spain and Italy. Guzmán, known as 'Chevi', started as the clear favourite.
On 15 October organisers postponed three road events because the asphalt was in poor condition. About 20 delegations refused to race after several skaters fell during warm-ups. The same circuit was due to host the marathon the next day.
Athletes could not inspect the road the night before, as the Costanera was still being finished. The circuit's events were rescheduled twice while potholes were repaired and the road was left to set. On the mended surface, Guzmán still found a record.
Maiorca took silver in 9.510 seconds. Guatemala's Faberson Bonilla claimed bronze in 9.732, some 0.265 behind the winner, a notable result for Guatemalan speed skating.
Fifth medal, third gold in Asunción
Guzmán had set his previous mark of 9.530 seconds on 13 August 2025, at the World Games in Chengdu, China, where it earned his second gold of those Games. In Asunción he took 0.063 seconds off it. The gold was his fifth medal of these Games.
Before the 100 m he had already won the one-lap sprint on the road and a relay, and he had added silver in the 200 m time trial and the 500 m sprint. At 29, the sprinter again holds the fastest time in his event.
