Australia's Joshua Jolly arrived at the brand-new National BMX Sports Base in Mentougou, Beijing, as an elite rookie. He left it as a World Cup winner, taking Round 6 on his debut weekend by 0.051 seconds.
Chased, pestered, then pounced
Jolly spent three straights tracking Jérémy Rencurel, pressing the Frenchman relentlessly as gusting winds made the track treacherous. "I was getting bucked wild because of the wind. I felt like I was a cowboy," he told the Australian Cycling Team.
On the final straight, he lunged at the line. The timing screen flashed 31.470 seconds — a margin so fine Jolly did not know he had won until it was confirmed. Filib Steiner took third, with series leader Jaymio Brink fourth.
