Kyle Kirkwood won the first ever motor race on the streets of Washington, D.C. on Sunday. The Andretti Global driver led 128 of 147 laps to claim the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix around the National Mall.
A Capital Performance, Unchallenged
The American started on the front row and took command early on the 1.7-mile temporary circuit. After a final restart on Lap 134, he rocketed away from the field. He crossed the finish line in front of the U.S. Capitol 3.09 seconds ahead of Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard.
At his peak, the margin stretched beyond 15 seconds as trouble hit others. Championship leader Alex Palou suffered a drive-through penalty and a loose tyre. He finished a lap down in 20th, watching his points lead shrink sharply.
