Pato O'Ward swept both races of the Milwaukee Mile doubleheader on a single Sunday, becoming the first IndyCar driver to win two races on the same day since Rick Mears in 1981.

A soggy Sunday turned historic

The day began with unfinished business from Saturday night. The Snap-on Makers and Fixers 250 had been suspended for rain, leaving 160 laps to complete before the scheduled second race could even start.

After a brief delay for more sprinkles, O'Ward seized his moment on a late restart with 19 laps to go. He pulled off an inside pass on David Malukas into Turn 1 on the historic 1.015-mile oval and never looked back.

A second chance, a second trophy

In the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250, Pato O'Ward again inherited the lead through another driver's misfortune on a final restart. He controlled the closing stages and finished 0.792 seconds ahead of Scott McLaughlin, with Arrow McLaren teammate Christian Lundgaard completing an all-Chevrolet podium.

The sweep put O'Ward alongside names like Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney and Bobby Unser as the only drivers to win two Indy car races in a single day. No one had done it since Mears at Atlanta Motor Speedway on 28 June 1981.

"I've dreamt of weekends like this before," O'Ward said afterwards. "We got to win both in a day. That's definitely a dream come true."

The wins were O'Ward's 12th career victory and his third at Milwaukee. They came on what would have been McLaren founder Bruce McLaren's birthday, a quiet symmetry to a rain-soaked Sunday.
