Christopher Blevins dropped his chain on the final lap of the short track. He won anyway. Then he returned the next day and took the full cross-country race. In the space of a weekend at Nové Město na Moravě, the American turned a mechanical setback into the centrepiece of a record that had never been set before.
The Elite Men's XCO on 24 May was the second act. The first, in the XCC short track, was the one that will be retold. Blevins lost his chain in the closing metres of the deciding lap, the kind of moment that ends most races on the spot. He recovered, held his line and drove to the front in the sprint. The victory made him the first rider in history to win the opening three XCC World Cup rounds of a single season.
A weekend decided in the detail
Twenty-four hours later, over the longer, more punishing cross-country distance, the margins were different but the outcome was the same. The XCO course at Nové Město is unforgiving: technical rock, root and root again, ridden lap after lap in front of one of the sport's loudest crowds. It rewards riders who stay clean under pressure. Blevins did. He raced at the front, managed the effort across the full distance and finished it off, completing the sweep of both titles on the same terrain that had almost undone him the day before.
