Asa Vermette won the 2026 UCI Downhill World Cup overall title at Lake Placid on Sunday, becoming only the second man in history to claim the elite crown in his rookie season. The 19-year-old American secured the title after a tense final run on a rain-hit Whiteface Mountain course, joining France’s Nicolas Vouilloz in one of mountain biking’s most exclusive clubs.

A crown decided in the final moments

The overall title came down to a two-way fight between Vermette and Britain’s Jordan Williams. French contender Amaury Pierron had already seen his outside hopes vanish after crashes in both qualifying sessions kept him out of the final. Vermette entered the last round with a 96-point lead, but the demanding, two-kilometre track — slick from wet weather and only drying late — left no room for certainty.

The decisive surge came from Canadian Finn Iles, who charged from well back to snatch third place with a series of flawless jumps on the last leg, pushing Williams down the order and handing the crown to the American rookie. Vermette’s run still clocked the day’s fastest standalone speed, at nearly 45 mph.

The latest name in a short American lineage

Vermette is only the second American to win the overall in the World Cup’s 33-year history, following five-time champion Aaron Gwin, whose last title came in 2017. He opened his first elite campaign with a win in South Korea, added two more podiums, and then took a commanding victory at Whistler last weekend to carry the series lead into the finale. The final margin over Williams was 66 points.

“It’s insane. I dreamed of it at the beginning of the season, so for it to happen is crazy,” Vermette told reporters after the race. After clinching, a US flag was draped over his shoulders as he ran the finish-area gates, high-fiving fans in a moment of pure relief.

Across nine rounds and three continents, a first-year rider carried the weight of expectation into a home-soil finale and held firm.
